Many advisors stood around Gongsun as he peered out from the balcony towards Nan Pi, before looking up to see beyond. The people of Bei Ping knew Lord Gongsun well. He had fought many times up north against the Mongolian Tribes wishing to invade the North, but there was something, or rather someone, that China had, that the Mongols didn’t, and that was none other than, Gongsun Zan. Lord Gongsun was famous for his white riders, making him a force to be reckoned with. Many people looked up to Gongsun, to see his strength. He didn’t desire power, as he had all that he could have, here in Bei Ping, however things were looking to change....
”Mylord, an envoy from Luo Yang has arrived. He reports most urgent news”, said one of his officials who had a guard beside him, no doubt it was that guard who reported the envoy’s arrival, but what could Luo Yang possible want. Wasn’t Gongsun busy enough by keeping the invaders of the North at bay, than to be disturbed and get into politics. Why do politics, when you could do horse-riding. It wasn’t politics which got Gongsun to where he was today, but his brute strength, his courage, and his desire for his home to be secure. His official also mentioned it was urgent, so he decided to find out more. Lord Gongsun wasn’t only a yielder of strength, but was one with much curiosity. He liked to make sure he had all information, probably explains why his tactics with the white riders have always prevented the barbarian guerrilla tactics. ”Bring him in”, he ordered, as he took the top seat, so he was higher than everyone else, though he didn’t really feel it.
The envoy entered, moving towards the front, before stopping to bow infront of Lord Gongsun, ”I have been sent by Grand General He Jin to ask for your assistance. A rogue force calling themselves, the Yellow Turbans, have attacked several cities and now their followers are growing and preparing to attack the Han. General He Jin admires the work you have done in the North, but now asks that you....turn the heels of your horses towards the south so to speak, and lend your assistance in the name of the Han. You shall be awarded for your efforts”.
Gongsun Zan thought about this. Did this mean, all this time he had been defending his land, the rulers of the land couldn’t keep mere rebels at bay, and now were asking him to take his strong troops to crush simple peasants and fanatics. It was absurd. What happened to the glorious Imperial Army which everyone once feared....”Give me some time to discuss this”.
”With respect Lord Gongsun, what is there to discuss. I mean, you’ve fought the foreign tribes, and now you can demonstrate your strength infront of the Han itself and it’s allies in the south. There will surely be a grand reward for such a feat”
The officials raised their eyebrows when the envoy spoke. How dare he raise his opinion against the governor of Bei Ping. ”Mylord, if the General of the Imperial Army wishes for our assistance, he no doubt sees us as a great asset in this. And if the South have joined in, we cannot allow the southerners to crush peasants while we are sitting on high horses. We should as the envoy suggests, turn our heels and move south. Demonstrate our strength, and show everyone the strength of the white riders...and who can say no to a reward. A grand one at that”.
Gongsun simply nodded, before standing up, ”Alright it’s settled! Send word to He Jin, that the White Riders will join the fray and trample on those who go against the will of the son of heaven!”, before turning to his officers, ”Prepare the men! We will show everyone our might and attack instantly that the Yellow Turbans won’t know what hit them!”, then turned to the officials, ”Increase trade production in the city, lower taxes, and inform the Blacksmith of our itinery. Everyone will not only see the strength and ferocity of the White Riders, but our determination and our great preparation!”, he then paused and turned to everyone, ”You are all dismissed. You have work to do”, and so does he though he didn’t mention it.
Once all had left, Gongsun glanced out once more from the balcony, before leaving the council chamber and moving to the streets........
